Inert Gas Fire Suppression

Inert Gas Fire Suppression

Advantages

Disadvantages

  • Readily available 'green' gases
  • Cheap to fill and refill
  • Cylinder banks can be stored considerable distances from the protected risk
  • Directional valves can be used to protect multiple risks from a single storage bank
  • No fogging or visibility issues in the protected area
  • Large volume of cylinders required
  • Significant storage and discharge pressures
  • Some types of fire require higher safety limit to ensure suppression
  • Care required in handling cylinders
  • Over pressurisation of the protected area requires careful consideration

Although Carbon Dioxide is a naturally occurring gas (with a normal atmospheric concentration of approximately 0.04%) it is not considered as an inert gas because it is physiologically active and is fatal at relatively low concentrations (its toxicity to humans increases with concentration but it is fatal at approximately 9% concentration).

Carbon Dioxide CO2 Gas Fire Suppression Systems

Carbon dioxide is a naturally occurring atmospheric gas that suppresses a fire by raising the CO2 concentration that has the effect of reducing oxygen to support the combustion process thus extinguishing the fire.

CO2 is particular useful for hazards where an electrical, non-conductive medium is essential or desirable.

Carbon Dioxide is an effective fire-extinguishing agent that can be used on many types of fires. It is effective for surface fires, such as flammable liquids and most solid combustible materials.
